I'm with Matt. Might as well connect to a RDBMS like MySQL over the web. Bob Lee (1amsoftware--what ever happened to Bob??) demonstrated this at WhilFest back in 2003 I believe. I loved it. Been using it for some clients since 2004 to date. However, as Christof pointed out, you don't have tight security unless you use a VPN of sorts.
