Personally, I use imagemagick (or analogous tools) whenever I am
dealing with images for myself.

However, when I am providing software for other people to use (or when
I am thinking about doing so), I prefer to support the most likely
data formats. Currently, in J, this can be difficult.

Meanwhile, "convolution" is a fairly generic term (not quite as
general as "summation" or "integration" but close), especially in the
context of image processing. Fourier Transforms and B-Splines are
both examples based on convolution, which can be relevant in image
processing. But convolution can also be used in blurs and edge
detection (for example).
