As Bill says, the J7/J8 project stuff is minimalist, and quite different from earlier systems. I am not sure we even use the term "Project Manager" now.

The main benefit of projects is to make it easy to organize and navigate your code, as well as test and do any builds. I find projects indispensable for maintaining the base library scripts as well as the several other systems I work on.
