I’ve been surprised to find quite some pdf viewers on my system:
• atril
• avplv
• evince
• mupdf
• pdf-shuffler
• xournal
• xpdf
at least they all seem to be registered with the extension.
Maybe I should clean up a bit …

But I guess your recommendation might be a good one,
judging by the result at
https://alternativeto.net/software/mupdf/
where it shows up on top when ranked by popularity.

As always, you have to take “wisdom of the crowd”
answers with a grain of salt, but oftentimes,
those at alternativeto are quite helpful.
