Sorry, I thought that Protel just SEEMED to hang up - it's what I experienced trying to import from database. In my case it was only extremely slow processing that looked like Protel was doing nothing for a long time. "Access violation" error was reported and discussed here many times in conjunction with several issues, but I don't know about any conclusion common to all those issues. Some posts pointed to wrong versions of MDAC. The only common workaround I remember was that in some cases clean reinstall used to help. No idea how to help with this.
