It used to be that drill drawings with symbols were bombsighted to get 
drill locations. That went out long ago. So the symbol locations on a drill 
drawing are now only reference data. The only remaining use, really, is for 
quickly checking drill sizes on parts on the board.

And for this purpose it is *much* better, in my opinion, to use the "size 
of hole string" option. It is sometimes objected that the holes are too 
close and the text from adjacent holes overlaps. The solution for this is 
to make the text small enough.... There is nothing wrong with, say, 20 mil 
text in this case. It's not going to be silkscreened on the board!

It would be nice to be able to specify the drill drawing text size 
individually for holes (or for hole classes). That way, the larger holes 
could have text large enough to be read even at 1:1, and the small holes, 
almost always vias, could have tiny text, since one would rarely need to 
read these hole sizes anyway; it is on footprints that the hole checking of 
the drill drawing is particularly useful.
