Tim,
        This may be asking the obvious, but how are you evaluating this, on
a print preview or the pcb? Have you checked closely by enlarging the area
in question? It could just be you have the clearance constraints set tightly
enough to make it "appear" to be in direct connect. Also, what is the relief
conductor width set to? If it is quite large, it might appear as a direct
connect. This width is set in the design rule and is separate from the
conductor width setting you are asked for when placing a polygon plane.
        It is possible to have the same polygon (same net) have two
different connect styles on the same layer. This is done in the design rules

It appears that my polygons are in direct connect mode when my design rules
