To fix this I have updated my parts library to have a 4th pin usually
connected to the correct pin on the package (eg center pin for 78XX
parts Colector for transistors etc) This pin is then hidden on the
schematic

HIDDEN? Don't never, ever use hidden pins! Never! They are hell. There is an automatism behind hidden pins. If you habe hidden pins with the same name they will connect together. Imagine if you habe hidden pins named with NC (Not Connected) ...

Show everything on your schematic! I'm burnt too many times.

If you really don't want a 4th pin on you part, stack the middle pin and the tab-pin on each other. After you connect a wire to them, a junction dot will remind you to this special situation.
