how did you make the lion bootable installer? did you just copy the lion .dmg or .pkg file to the external then booted from it? If so try using the lion disc maker to make a lion bootable installer. If you have an 8 or 16 gb flash drive laying round, I'd suggest using that for your boot drive. then install to one of the SSD drives.
