I believe that's exactly what will happen: if there's an AAX equivalent, it'll just load as usual. That's good info on default application. I never had to specify a default application for anything except maybe text documents or something. Frankly, never had two versions of Pro tools on the same partition until now. Even when a default is set, however, it's easy to right-click on the file and choose "Open With" and select the version of Pro Tools if different from your default.
