Hi steve,
After you make the selection, press Command+r to capture the region. You'll be 
asked to name the clip. If you've selected on a round number, you don't even 
have to go through the trouble of importing to time stamp. Just export the clip 
with Command+Shift+k and import it into the new session and cut and paste to 
the same place on the timeline.
