I think I should also report what I was able to do so far. This is on Debian, so it should work on Ubuntu too. It will also give the hints on what to do in Fedora and other distros. 1. Made sure I have PA_in.utf8 locale installed. I also have Gurmukhi fonts installed (Lohit, Saab, and some others). I can view and input gurmukhi in web browsers, thunderbird, word processors, and almost all other applications. Except in Terminal or Konsole or Xterm. 2. So, I installed rxvt-unicode-ml package. 3. Made sure I had the related X fonts installed. In a terminal, this command should list the fonts installed: $> xlsfonts | grep iso10646 Then I started rxvt which supports unicode: $> LANG=pa_IN.utf8 rxvt-unicode -fn -fn -*-fixed-*-*-*-*-*-200-*-*-*-*-iso10646-* (that in on one single line) And I was able to type and see Punjabi (but many of the ligatures were not working, pappe pair hahha for example). 4. Now, I made sure I had aspell-pa installed: $> dpkg -l aspell-pa ii aspell-pa 0.01-3 Punjabi (pa) dictionary for GNU aspell 5. Next, I typed some Punjabi text in a text file. Call it p.txt. 6. To use aspell to check its spelling, I did: $> aspell -dpa -c p.txt and aspell let me correct the spelling it thought were wrong. REmember, this was in rxvt-unicode terminal. Now, I noticed that aspell is not ready for Punjabi. I appears to lack many words, many of them common. So looks like a lot of work is required to build a proper Punjabi word dictionary yet. In any case, I was at least able to check Punjabi spelling in a terminal.
