Issue #2349 has been updated by Nigel Kersten.

Oh I'd be doing the code and tests. I just wanted to put in the bug report to
start exactly this kind of discussion :)

I'm honestly not quite sure whether we can have the same parameter support
both, given that responsefile takes a local path.

I can't see any debconf values on any of my systems that start with a "/", so I
guess so long as we're using unix-y paths we can do a hacky check on the
contents to work out whether it's a file or text, but then it seems like
"responsefile" is a bad name for the parameter.

What about deprecating "responsefile" (as it doesn't seem like an accurate name
in the first place) and adding "preseed" which can take either a string,a
File[...] resource or a local path ? Then we wouldn't have to set up
dependencies manually even when using a file.... ?

Hmm. From looking at the man page for pkgadd (as the sun provider uses
responsefile) it looks like 'response' is the correct term there.

Can we come up with a more generic term? pkg_configuration or something?

The current responsefile method just doesn't seem very Puppet-y. Having to
define a File resource manually and set up the relationship between that and
the Package resource, and specifying a local filesystem path just feels wrong.

Feature #2349: apt provider should support 'responsedata' just like
'responsefile'

We're looking to use preseed data with apt a lot more, so have been
experimenting with the responsefile parameter for apt, but it's kind of clunky
given you have to deliver the file to the client and set up relationships by
hand.

I'm proposing adding a responsedata parameter where you simply specify this in
the puppet manifest itself, rather than relying upon a separate file.

As debconf-set-selections accepts input on stdin, this should be trivial to do.
