You don't need a full install or to recompress anything, the easiest way
is to make your CF just like it was a liveUSB (liveHD method) with a
persistent partition (like on the keys we use).

It's really easy and simple, I have a p:d running on a CF on a SBC and
the persistent mode allows me to make such tweaks (xorg.conf, but also
add extra packages, put personal files, etc...)

It's also a bit more friendly to the flash memory, as your main system
is read-only and need little rw operation (no swap needed also if you
have enough RAM).
