no difference.
like i said i fyou do aptitude install modemmanager thats all you need - unless 
prblems continue - that was all i had to do to get a virgin mobile 3g usb modem 
working - was alittle bit weird - had to restart a couple of times and 
connection was erratic - but it did work - once you can see your device in the 
nmaplet then i think its ok - you can post some dmesg output here if you think 
it cantains any hints to what your problem is.
also in mail threads can you not delete previous replies - it makes it very 
hard 
to follow whats going on if you do this

any reason why you used dpkg -i instead of using a package manager such as 
aptitutude or synaptic?
