Tim Berners-Lee is quite specific about the early history and motivation re:
web editing in his book "Weaving the Web". There are many refs to web
editing since this was definitely part of his idea.
i.e.,page 29
"By mid-November [1990] I had a client program written--a point and click
browser/editor - which I just called World Wide Web. By December it was
working with the Hypertext Markup Language I had written...The browser would
decode URIs, and let me read, write, or *edit* web pages in HTML. "
At TBL's urging CERN put the whole technology in the public domain. My
guess is that he would be a formidable defender of the free exchange of
these ideas.
