I've now discovered glPointParameter with GL_POINT_DISTANCE_ATTENUATION what does the trick for me as I just wanted to change the PointSize dependent on the distance to the camera. Unfortunately, this procedure seems to affect the performance much more than drawing points with a fixed size.
