I've upgraded the developer tools, which gives me gcc 4, which lets me build gcc-3.4.4 from source. I can use that in turn to build PyLucene, and with the newer developer tools, the test for -LSystemStubs in the Makefile also works fine. (Though I still think it's a bad test -- it should check the version of "ld", not the version of the OS). Thanks again for the help.
