That might be the most fruitful avenue for a merge. I don't have the cycles
to do that, but perhaps Andreas could reach out to the new python.el author on
our behalf and see about the feasibility of that.

Hi Barry,
AFAIS all the python modes own a lot from each other, so there are not
really different modes but branches.
The new python.el comes with some interesting docu features, we should
check and maybe pick.
For the moment I'm still at the syntax- resp. XEmacs-compat ie
non-syntax-parsing issue.
The latter is slower but somehow interesting, as purely emacs-lisp based
and looks promising for some more tasks beside python-string-detection.
However, not ready yet...
