As others have said, I think it's totally worth investing the time to get eclipse/PyDev set up. The install has been a little trouble every time, but there's a lot of payback, especially once your project starts getting bigger. The install might even be easy with Christian's super-post above! I didn't know about that before.
I used to use Komodo which was OK, but actually I think eclipse/PyDev is superior in every way except the install (and it's free). For anything new I would go straight to git for version management. If you're on Windows TortoiseGit is awesome.
