because “ it has always been done that way” Not to argue (though you make it very tempting to do so!), but even if this were true then even it has its merits, as it invokes the POLA <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principle_of_least_astonishment> and turns into convention. It means the reader of your code won’t have to think twice when coming across your boolean, which they would otherwise have to do if you chose to do it differently. ;)
