OK, so movie has to be sized before the thumbnail is made into a button. Resizing the movie when it's a button only resizes the frame object, not the contents of the frame. This explains some very weird behavior I'd noticed.
I find this rather confusing since the movie thumbnail start and end times are controlled in the same "movie properties" dialogue whether buttoned or not. Moreover, in the "edit button" dialogue there are separate (advanced) controls for the button size/shape. Shouldn't this be considered a bug? I'd expect the movie properties dialogue to control the movie properties, not the button's frame. The button properties should be (and are) in their own dialogue.
