if it was a RAM problem you should see some strange messages in 
/var/log/messages, sort of "buffer list corrupted" etc.
Also you can try a forced fsck, we found this a good test for faulty
RAM and other troubles
   telinit 1    ## wait until shell prompt comes
   mount -o remount,ro /
   e2fsck -f /

For emergency exits from X use ALT-CTRL-Backspace, ALT-CTRL-DEL works
only in text mode.

Having a second computer to login remotely is always nice, I think
the QL can do that pretty well with QTPI or similar.

Btw I can email diffs for newest 2.2.17 kernel, will probably upload
it sometime next week.
