You haven't read the 'manual' recently have you - it is explained there.
It means you get a keyboard *before* the boot even gets thought about.
It allows you to completely mess up the boot and still have a working
system.

Yes - it is v useful.  There is a cunning use of diodes to allow that
*and* the fixed LED without overloading the memory line.
