Hi Richard

Yes, you're right, it might be the C10 capacitor in your monitor.
If this fails, the screen compacts or goes wobbly,
even though the OPD base unit usually runs OK.

I will dig out the details of my engineer friend to see what he charges,
as I've nervous about the high (10 - 25Kv) charges in CRT monitors!

Other tips :
 =========

You could try the following with the monitor switched on and OPD attached :
  - Adjust the contrast bar a few times until you see a clear picture
  - Press the 'standby' button a few times with the monitor on

It's easy to leave the mono monitor in standby mode by mistake, or to have
the contrast down too low. The contrast switch can also come loose.

Re - OPD vs QL colour Microvitec monitor
================================

The C10 capacitor in the switch mode power supply for the mono
(and possibly colour) monitor had a tendency to fail.
It's a quick and easy job to change and it cures the majority of problems
 with dead screens.

The usual precautions of grounding yourself and discharging
high voltage monitors (there's 11KV in the mono monitor,
25Kv + in the colour monitor) still apply!

I'll have to dig out schematic of the OPD colour monitor,
but it's very similar to the BBC and QL one.

You can see inside the OPD colour monitor here :

I just need to dig out the circuit diagram and will send you the details in
   the next few days.

I know a few people modified the colour monitors to work with the QL.
You can even modify the mono monitor to work on the QL, but you need
to add a large ballast resistor or bulb to act as a 'phantom' OPD!

Thanks
Dan.

I think I have a power problem, in that I get the Modem "chattering"
with the LEDs for the line acitivity flickering, nothing from the
monitor, and no bars/power/POST of any kind apparent on the OPD itself.

If I can try either a new lead in my current OPD Medium-Res display
(it's been modified to be a QL monitor with the power line detached
at both ends and an 8-PIN DIN connector fitted) or have another way
of powering up the OPD (mostly, I need the connector to the OPD),
then I can verify my base unit/modem works (as it had been for
several days quite happily) and I'll gladly pay a TV engineer to
refurbish my OPD mono display. Full capacitor replacement!

It was a bit "wobbly" when powered up - ripples on the display - so I
suspect that may have been a sign of incoming PSU failure.

Are there any boards other than the large Microvitec one in the
colour display? I think the OPD must take 12V from there, but I'd
like to be certain - there's an unused connector on the 240V cables
inside.

Richard
