Used to be that you must call a utility called FDISK.EXE from a DOS
session (not a DOS box!).
I do not know if XP is still the same kind of MS...

The hard disk is present, but without partition, the OS cannot use it.
So, make your partition (even a single big one), then format it/them.
One step at a time.

FDISK is not user-friendly, if you can use something else (like
partition-magic), it can be easier.
