Many thanks everyone who responded so quickly.

After sending the original email, I dug out an old small capacity
(40MB?) Qubide format hard disk I'd somehow managed not to throw away
years ago and hooked this up. Both the FDISK & FORMAT programs and
Disk Management managed to reformat this drive OK, so I went back to
the new drive and tried again (having written down step by step how I
got the old drive to format).

Sadly, no joy. It seems all I can get out of the new drive is its
identification string, I can't get it to work using either FDISK +
FORMAT or from Disk Management. I'll get in touch with the supplier as
it's probably DOA - it's advertised as a very quiet drive (Hitachi
Deskstar) but it seems to get very noisy when the computer starts it
up, probably an indication all is not well.

Shame, I was looking forward to using my first day off since Easter to
put all my QL software onto one single drive rather than being
scattered between two hard disks and several CDs and DVDs etc. The PC
presently has a 40GB and 80GB drives and I'd found it impossible to
resist this 250GB drive for just 40 pounds.

Must say one thing: having your day to day QL software in a single
QXL.WIN makes it sooo easy to make a backup...just one file to copy in
Windoze, whether it goes to a CD/DVD or to the second hard drive!
