The real point I was making is that Vista does not seem to have made much effort at "upward compatibility". There seems to be no guarantee that things that worked under XP will work at all under Vista (and indeed, they don't). When XP came in, it did complain about pre-XP drivers, but generally let them do their thing. The policy in Vista seems to be less accommodating. My approach with Linux is generally "If it doesn't have Linux drivers, don't buy it". The other side of that coin, though, is pretty much "If it EVER had drivers under Linux, they are still here, and they work NOW."
