Yes indeed. With two of you it might be worth hiring a car. In France I
paid only £90 or so for 6 days.
It is half that time I guess.
I think I'd rather let the train take the strain while on holiday - Swiss railways are apparently pretty efficient.

Main problem for me will be the British end of things, the journey times from here to Luton airport (depending on train time and number of changes en route), and allowing time for probably inevitable rail delays and airport time will make the outbound and return days VERY long, so I don't really fancy driving a lot over there if I'm likely to be tired even before I've got there.

Baggage is the only unseen extra (if you ignore food and coffee). At
least Easyjet are not *considering* charging for the loo, unlike
Ryanair. I think they did that just for the publicity, as they withdrew
it quickly.
Or maybe they were testing the waters and the very public backlash persuaded them not to.

I can see the baggage being an issue with the number of sweaters I'll need for Switzerland that time of year!

Mind you Argos sell a pretty good (and big) cabin bag for about £6.50. I was surprised how large the max actually is. I immediately took off the wheels and handle which increased capacity enormously, and reduced the
weight. I really do not want to look like an Apprentice candidate!
Thanks for that suggestion. The bag I meant, not "look like an
Apprentice candidate..."
Just had a quick look now and maybe I found the wrong bag. Price £7.50, the one I saw is larger than Easyjet's max cabin bag size unfortunately.

(smoothing caps for Compswitch), batteries, touch switches and the like - in my toolbox. Freddie arrived menacingly and said quite aggressively to her in the way only Freddie can when he jokes "Why are you giving us
innocent people such grief". Suddenly she became quite a different
person. Oh dear, Freddie!!!
Oops. Guilty by association with Freddy eh? Well intentioned, but...

I remember meeting Darren Branagh off a ferry at Holyhead en route to a Quanta workshop a few years ago. With a bulging suitcase full of QL gear, and being Irish, he unsurprisingly got challenged and taken to a side room for checking. He emerged smiling after quite a while and I made some silly comment, the kind you regret 5 seconds later - looking back I'm surprised I didn't get pulled in as well.

Switzerland isn't EU of course, so we need to find out if a laptop or USB pens (QL On A Stick) can be taken, for example. As I've only just
Definitely OK.
As long as the laptop is not in checked-in hold luggage it seems, must be in cabin hand baggage (Not that you'd risk putting it in hold baggage anyway)

Everyone has to be treated as a terrorist.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindawi_affair
I see what you mean.

It is always a juggling act balancing security and freedom. Innocents get bother while tabloid reporters manage to smuggle guns through airports. Do they ask a lady wearing a face veil for religious reasons to show her face and possibly cause offence or an incident? Do we go for ID cards like other countries, or don't we trust our authorities to be able to handle large IT projects and protect our personal details properly? In a free society there has to be a balance, yet it doesn't always work as well as it ought to!

A security guy at the Beeb years ago told me the kind of unusual (to me anyway) things to look out for - an example he gave was of an unfamiliar face walking through reception with cups of takeaway hot drinks in hands. Few untrained people would normally challenge them. Think like a terrorist to catch a terrorist. With all the things you've carroed to meetings all over the place over the years I'm surprised you're not top of the stop lists by now!

The joys of going to international QL meetings eh? Sadly, I never managed to get to any of the American ones, must have missed a lot of fun at those! Never been to Switzerland before either so this will be a nice outing if I do end up going (assuming I haven't driven Ann up the wall about it by then!)
