Mind you Argos sell a pretty good (and big) cabin bag for about £6.50. I was surprised how large the max actually is. I immediately took off the
wheels and handle which increased capacity enormously, and reduced the
weight. I really do not want to look like an Apprentice candidate!
Thanks for that suggestion. The bag I meant, not "look like an
Apprentice candidate..."
Just had a quick look now and maybe I found the wrong bag. Price £7.50, the one I saw is larger than Easyjet's max cabin bag size unfortunately.
This is the one, now £13.99 (286-1962):

OK one dimension is .5 over the limit, but it is a flexible bag. I have used it many times now and it is fine.

The dimensions of mine without wheels and extendable handle are 52 x 40 x 20. Cabin baggage max is 56 x 45 x 25 Just be careful how much you stuff in as it swells in the middle, or wear all the sweaters, and overcoat, and trousers.

There is a great film of someone who did just that. They had something like five under pants, 4 socks, four trousers and three sweaters on, so they could be under the baggage weight limit! I think it was one of those TV airport programs - probably even Easyjet at Luton! It was not against the rules. I won't go into the unfairness of not catering for body weight - that would be unfair (8-)#

Ah yes baggage. I was on another journey to a US trip. It was KLM and because of the silly rules about UK airport allocations, I had to take a London City hop to Amsterdam - all included though in the price. Allowance was 32kg total for two bags - quite the norm at the time. I was sceptical so checked London City - yep two bags but 20kg total. I had about 31kg - rucksack and bicycle. I told Lufthanza who denied this - by email (I had the copy with me). They *said* they even sent an email to London City. Luckily for me the queue was empty, and I must have looked like I was going to burst into tears. I told the girl on the checkout of the need for the bike the other end to cycle *out* of the airport. She looked around, and said "Your bike is extremely light". I looked puzzled and she wrote 5kg on the ticket.
.... and 5kg off my rucksack. Amazing. I should have asked her out (8-)#
I saw the reason on take-off. The runways at London City are balanced between old docks, and are very short. It is the first time I have been in a plane which revs so much before letting the brakes off. It was like being catapulted. Needless to say my 15kg bike did *not* send us into the water (8-)#
