I also use an add-on for Thunderbird called Quote Collapse - this
basically reduces quoted text to a single line with a + sign at the
side, so you can expand it to read it if you like,
I had to upgrade to 3.0 to install that, and that reminded me why I
reverted to 2.n last time.
A load of my favourite addons have gone - like bcc and size of
attachments.
It has also messed up the attribution (see above).
Also the 'reply' and 'reply all' button is not on the program toolbar
any more - I have to right click.
All in all *not* a good upgrade.
.... but quotecollapse is very good indeed.
.... and it has somehow messed up the filter I have on my imap server
and mail is now sitting in the inbox, which is in a 'smart folder',
whatever that is. Not so smart I think.
This is the first Thunderbird upgrade that is disastrous. What are they
up to!

Tony,
I switch the Smart Folder option off, thjis is in the Account setup for
each email account you have.
All message filters work as expected, after the deactivating of the
Smart Folder option.
