You can switch Ubuntu back to ye olde view at the login screen, I've done
that on my boxen and all appears well.

If your machine is powerful enough, you should be able to run a Windows
virtual machine inside your Linux box; I don't know whether that would give
you floppy access or not, or indeed bluray playing abilities; but it might
be a solution to the problem at hand (ironic: having to run an emulator in
an "emulator"). VirtualBox is a freely downloadable VM system
("apt-get"table), also VMWare's VM Player is free for non-commercial use.
Natch, you need an old XP licence (or a Win 7 Pro licence, which allows you
to "downgrade" to XP).
