You can switch Ubuntu back to ye olde view at the login screen, I've done

Yes, I believe that this is indeed the case. I was using Gnome3 on
Fedora 15 - I hated it. I tried to like it, but two things were against
it, I much prefer KDE and at work, I have to use Gnome2. It never reallu
stood a chance. However, I'm sure it will catch on!
If your machine is powerful enough, you should be able to run a Windows
virtual machine inside your Linux box; I don't know whether that would give
you floppy access or not, or indeed bluray playing abilities;
Good point! This laptop is running VirtualBox as I need to do work on
various "servers" for work purposes, so I have Mint 11, SLS 11,
Scientific Linux 6, Windows XP and Uncle Tom Cobbly and all!
This is my (own) company's laptop and I bought the best I could afford
as I expect it to last about 10 or more years - like my last one did -
before I need to replace it. It had the top Core 2 Duo CPU and was
stuffed full of 8 GB RAM.
It happily runs multipel VMs at the same time.
I have no floppy disc, so I've got no idea if a VM will allow me to
access the floppies or not.
I never thought about the Blue Ray DVD abilities though p- but as I
don't have Blue Ray at home, it's not a problem.
VirtualBox is brilliant.
Cheers,
Norm.
