Previous reprints were organised (I think) by Phil Borman and possibly
John Taylor.
There is an email to this list by John Taylor on 7/3/11:
The QL must be very much alive.
The used Jan Jones book sold for £23 on eBay.
Quanta sold them, new, for £8
JJ got £5 and Quanta paid for the reprint out of their £3.
Which at least shows John Taylor has at least some knowledge of the
matter.
This is a helpful clarification. John Taylor was involved in organising the
reprints as I had contact with him in the mid noughties. At the time there
were some requests for a third reprint, but Quanta saw no reason to do this
as at the time there were many second hand copies available.
As Sarah is away, I'll ask Alison to delve into past Quanta minutes to see
what if any information we can find on the subject, as I don't know
whether the original Quanta permission was for one reprint or ongoing.
If an approach were to be made to Jan Jones it probably would best come from
Quanta as an "official" body. However I cannot stress enough that there is
all the difference in the world between a limited reprint with paid
royalties and complete publication on the internet.
On the wider issues that seem to be causing some tension, what current
owners of the book do privately and strictly for their own use is not too
serious a matter. Most of us technically break copyright on all sorts of
things for our own use. Recording TV programs and CDs; backup copies of
software; transferring video to DVD etc. Provided this remains within the
home and the user owns the original no one worries.
Family historians face this problem all the time. A lot of the material we
collect is copyright - for example all birth, death and marriage
certificates carry a crown copyright. For personal use this is no problem.
My family history CD contains much copyright material, but I distribute it
only to the family and it has a disclaimer on the label that its is for
private use and not to be copied. I am thinking of putting some of the
information on my website, but it will have to be a heavily cut down version
with few illustrations,
Best Wishes,
Geoff
