Bill, you can have up to 8 'win' drives with QPC, if you like :-) ...
just like all QL devices are up to 8 in number ( in current OS version
).
Just name them 'win1_', 'win2_', etc when you 'format' them under QPC.
They can be of different 'sizes' to suit what you intend to put into
them. Which can be very, very useful. As some can be small, and others
much bigger.
In fact with QPC you are only creating a 'very big file' called 'win1_',
etc, under SMSQ/E, not an actual hard drive - so think of it as a
'virtual drive'. Each will be a 'Qxl.win' file in your Windows C:\ start
directory. Have a look and see. Right click with the mouse, and go
down to properties on the pop-up menu. This will give you the size of
the file in Mb's.
To create a 'win1_' you have to use a 'two step process :
WIN_FORMAT 1 Allow for WIN1_ to be formatted
FORMAT WIN1_10 Create 10Mb WIN device ...
After you have done this you can 'protect' the 'drive' against
accidental reformatting with :
WIN_FORMAT 1,0 Protect WIN1_ against unwanted formatting
( only under SMSQ/E )
To create 'win2_' you therefore use WIN_FORMAT 2, followed by FORMAT
WIN2_size_required in Mb's.
Look at pages 10 and 11 in the Manual Revision v2.04.
So, you could have all your 'jpeg' graphic files stored on a 'win2_'
drive of suitable size - say 2Gb ( FORMAT WIN2_2000 ), and keep 'win1_'
for QL programs, etc
Other 'fun' can be had with 'names' for the 'Qxl.win' files if you are
so inclined :-)
Another feature of QPC that you ought to get used to is the 'DOS' drive
and directory assignments.
By 'default', 'DOS1_' is assigned to your Windows C drive - C:\
... so typing 'dir dos1_' with QPC running will show you the entire
contents of your C:\ drive.
You can use this as convenient 'shortcut' to anything else that you want
regular access to. For example, I have 'DOS2_' assigned to
'C:\Downloads', so that I can easily copy any downloaded 'zip' files
across to the QL system with QPC.
Example - 'copy dos2_qlfile.zip to ram1_qlfile_zip'
Will copy 'qlfile.zip' from the 'C:\Downloads' directory to a ram drive,
as well as changing the '.zip' to '_zip'.
I would also recommend Dilwyn's 'QTrans' - dual window file transfer -
as it makes it a 'doddle' to copy files from one device to another with
the pointer environment, rather than typing direct commands.
