As a general rule single devices on double headed cables should always be plugged into the last connector. I have never had a satisfactory explanation of this from anyone (does the electrickery leak out of the open end I wonder ? No don't answer that!) I have found that even plugging a single CD ROM into the middle connector without one at the end makes it malfunction.

Also always use the 40 wire cable and not the 80 wire ones for Compact flash readers.
