Wolfgang is in a particular position, but I would like to add: "Me too, as a user, want to be able to compile any version myself." (what if I ever get another platform in a futur, when everybody would be away ?) One of the reason I like it that way is that nobody could turn into an asshole-king-of-the-platform-Pay-me-if-you-want-that-binary at the whole OS level. Removing that temptation is just apaising the mind. The other reason, is checking compilation. If, whenever you do a patch, you have to send it worldwide to just compile and check it for the various platforms, you will have to resort to old compilation technics (of the '60: you provided the code on monday morning and got your error list on thusday evening, each compilation tries take 2 days, the project is for the end of the week: you cannot use the actual procedure of debugging only the first few errors, without even checking your syntax manually)
