I completely agree that dealing with just one img file is an enormous simplification. However it's not always true that modern GPS units don't have much limits as to the map size they can handle. For instance, I've got a Garmin Edge 520 (2015), and it has a memory of around 110 MB. This means you have to limit the map data to around 90MB. > I don't know why OpenMTBMap still clings to the old ways. The issue is there when you need to create a submap from a huge host of data like OpenMtbMap's Europe map. How do you figure out what tiles do you need to create the consolidated .img file? The only option is QLandkarte GT, since QMapShack does not support .tdb and submap selection/export. I believe OpenMtbMap distribuites maps that way because it's simpler to provide all data, and let the users create their submaps based on their needs. If you just need data of one single country (e.g. Italy), there is no issue whatsoever, provided you have enough room on your GPS unit. You download that country's OpenMtbMap, and use the provided shell script to create the consolidated gmapsupp.img file. By contrast, if you travel over country borders you would need the maps of both countries, and on some GPS devices like Edge 520 you don't have enough room for it. > As an alternative you can give Basecamp a try. Now I do have a MacBookPro, but I run linux on it--not Mac OS. Thus Basecamp is not an option. > Or you start to accept the new concepts. The point is--how? How do you create the submap you need? E.g. I need a map covering the Ligurian Alps for my Christmas holidays. This is a little subset of Italy and France maps. How do I select just the tiles I need? Doing it by hand is cumbersome. QLandkarte GT proviedes an effective visual tool to do it, while QMapShack don't. I see the former is still working software at the moment. But not being actively developed any longer, in the future it will likely stop working on new operating systems and harware. We can't know when, but it will. > And of course the usual (in-)famous last words: If someone really needs > it and volunteers to port and maintain the code he/she is welcome. Yes, that's totally reasonable for an open source project. What stops me is I fear it would take me years, and I'm not sure I know how to do it. But perhaps I will give it a try, if I find courage :-) Regards, Davide ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Developer Access Program for Intel Xeon Phi Processors Access to Intel Xeon Phi processor-based developer platforms.
