It's not needed, just like you don't need to put your seatbelt on.  It's
just "good practice".  From the maildrop pages:

"The exception statement traps errors that would normally cause maildrop
to terminate. If a fatal error is encountered anywhere within the block of
statements enclosed by the exception clause, execution will resume
immediately following the exception clause."

As it is, if something goes wrong with spamc, all your mail will defer.
With the exception line it will be delivered properly (without spamass
tagging/filtering).
