A mere cache directory wouldn't impose a size penalty, or would it?! Generate the cache - as a directory?! Generate the cache - with contents?! But what should it contain?! Framework classes?! With which optimization/variant?! And then make it read-only?! Where then would the custom class cache items go?! You seem to have the idea that the cache only contains framework items that never change after installation. But this would only be true in a very limited scenario. And even if it was the case, I wouldn't want to ship runtime generated files.
