Drew, Margaret, Helen, Bill and ITS teachers an excellent thread, providing some great stimulus for planning in ITS.
Can I suggest that this thread be extended to explore all the great ideas that
might be happening around Qld in ITS, as we move towards a post VET era.
As we eventually will have the need to rewrite WPs, the time is ripe for
exploring where we can take ITS without the constraints of the VET components.
It has to be a truly exciting time and opportunity to pursue relevant
technologies that will engage our students.
I'm not sure if this is the best venue, or the ITS Edna site?
Ideas?

Subject: RE: [qsiteict] ITS - Flash animations and uploading to mobile phone
I have done Flash Animations for Mobiles with my Year 9 class this year. Ile
they have used ActionScript, it has been at a fairly low level and the amount
of design and evaluation was nothing like what I would expect from an ITS class.
However, the basis of your concern is probably about the issues to do with
mobile phones.
We used Adobe CS4 and installed Device Central in addition to Flash. The
computers also need fairly free access to the internet for Device Central to
download the device library from the Adobe site. All of this took lots of
negotiation with our tech guys.
I bought a couple of base-level Nokia phones because they have Flash Lite Ver
2.0 and will work without a SIM card. Maybe other brands can do this as well.
Start the process in Device Central specifying the brand and model of phone
being targeted, and select "New Flash File". Device Central and Flash do the
rest for you, creating the correct size stage. When you preview the animation,
it opens Device Central and the animation appears in a "skin" of the phone. The
skin includes the phone keyboard and buttons- all active just like the real
thing. It is really cool. You can then just download the "SWF" file to the real
phone using a USB cable or Bluetooth. The kids loved it.
Developing for Flash Lite presents a couple of constraints compared to
developing an animation to run on a computer, but it is still a really cool
assignment. Go for it.
As an aside, I used the same phones for my Year 11 ITS class to develop a movie
in a video unit. It breaks away from developing for just a computer. I also
have a Wii that they are going to develop products for as well.

Subject: [qsiteict] ITS - Flash animations and uploading to mobile phone
Hi all
We are offering ITS again in 2011 after a break of a couple of years. At
meetings in the past I have heard of people planning to have their students
write flash animations and then upload them to their mobile phones. Has anyone
tried to do this as part of their course? Has it been successful/not too
difficult?
The reason I am asking is that I am thinking of advertising it to our current
year 10 students as one of the 'features' of the course. As I only know the
concept, not the technicalities (they can come later), if it is not feasible, I
will not promote it. Don't want to be accused of false advertising.
Thanks
Bill
