Quad,
Here's what I know. The young man in question was cited back on Oct 25 for
blocking an intersection with he's personal vehicle. He was to appear in
court to address/answer that citation and he did not appear. The judge issued
a
bench warrant for his arrest and the sheriff's office sent a deputy to his
house for arrest, detention until next hearing, or raising bond of $2000
dollars and being released until the hearing date.
Deputies are giving the responsibility to bring in those warranted and they
did as ordered, using the Sheriff's Office manual wheelchair to bring him in
for detention processing and booking.
During the booking process, at the detention center, a deputy pushed the
young man from his chair onto the ground without warning. He was frisk'd and
padded down for weapons and contraband, before he was booked into county
lockup. He was able to post the bond and released on Feb 3 to go home.

After the video was released to the internet and the young man hired an
attorney, he has been interviewed several times on national television.
Nothing
has been mentioned about the pending charges for evading, and running from
the local police back on October 25th only that which happened while he was
in
booking.
One deputy was dismissed without pay and 2 supervisors were suspended with
pay a 3rd person was suspended with pay.

The County Sheriff when interview after reviewing was shock and appalled at
the entire situation and did not condone the action or actions.

I don't believe that the young man deserved being thrown from the chair. I
don't believe the deputies followed written protocol for handling a prisoner.
Those involved will have THEIR day in court and hopefully punished.
I won't say more, until I know more. I wouldn't want my own to experience
this and the same could be said about members of this list.

Does anyone else know more facts that are relevant to this?
Best Wishes
W

As most people on here know, I live in Tampa. I have been watching this
video for the last two days and have been fielding calls from my family and
friends around the neighborhood.
They especially while my outlook as I was a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper
in St. Petersburg for a little more than a year back in the 80s. They know I
have dealt with taking disabled people in jail and wanted to hear my outlook.
Frankly I think the Florida Attorney General had the exact same reaction I
had.

What I wanted to know immediately was why this particular sheriff's deputy
was not charged. If this had been some regular citizen dumping a deputy on
the ground, they would have been in cuffs lickety-split. While I understand
the complexity of trying to search someone who is wheelchair-bound and knowing
that some people fake paralysis in an effort to get out of going to jail, I
think it was patently obvious that this particular individual had been
paralyzed for quite some time.

Even Governor Charlie Crist has weighed in on this particular issue.
>From what I heard initially from this individual was that each is simply
wanted to bring this to light to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I don't think he had any broken ribs. He just thought he did.
The main thing is wrong was done and he did not deserve the justice that was
given by a sheriff deputy, acting like a judge. The American justice doesn't
work that way and I'm sure that before this is over, you will hear a lot
more noise and action from the disAbled Community and the Legal System.
Damages
for this kind of needless exercise will cost the Sheriff's Office more than
a million dollars. Wait and see.
Best Wishes

I'm trying to find more on the story. I saw it on the news (CNN) this
morning. He had several broken ribs from the incident.
