I had a wound in 2001 that nearly killed me. It started as a small dry crack near the ischium in late 2000; it stayed superficial until it got infected and started tunneling. The wound tunneled to about six inches deep and gave me osteomyelitis. In October 2001- I had my ischium shaved in order to remove infected bone, and then a full muscle flap. Luckily I have been wound free every since. I still get reddish/pink in the same area; however, every 7-8 hours I am up we check my skin and slather it with bag balm. If memory serves me correctly, you should take in about 70 grams of protein a day to help heal a wound.
I too am very thin- any ideas for putting on a few healthy pounds? Good luck and best wishes! I started taking a multivitamin and am trying to increase my protein and calories. I've lost a lot of weight since my accident which hasn't helped my skin integrity. I know if I can get it to granulate new tissue by keeping it covered I will be better off in the long run. If I let it scab over when it heals I'll have an indentation and nothing between bone and skin. I like the idea of using the new skin to toughen it up after its healed. This site is great, you've given me so many more ideas than my doctor has had. I will let you know how it goes and what works.
