I don't use the bag but people I have talked to who do have actually liked it.
An Antidote: A veteran going to the VA hospital for being impacted was observed stimulating, and was reported to the head nurse for abusing himself. Well he was stopped until a male night shift nurse could do his BC. By that time his BP was 280/160 ! Regarding hard stool, contrary to some opinion, a large glass of prune juice during BC did indeed soften the stool in less than an hour. Some first hand reasons for hard stool for me was one, long time use of morphine. Second reason was definitely not drinking enough water. Third is that left over stool from the previous BC. To me, hard stool is the sign of an incomplete empting. Digital Stimulation is necessary even after the main movement. It is not over until the mucus turns clearish. BC is the main reason why most caregivers leave. I do offer $5.00 more per hour but this is not fun to anyone, especially dear Mom. I seldom give advice but if a spouse or family member does the personal care, do hire a person with nursing home experience, they've seen it all. In the interview talk explicitly about this area. Good luck. Well he had to move in with his mother and she refused to do digital stimulation.......she would only insert suppossitories and wait. This resulted in many accidents and him wearing diapers daily. He couldnt even bend for fear of an accident. After awhile things became worse he got impacted over and over........so the hosspital said they were really going to help him by giving him a colostomy bag. Now hes still in the hospital with the bag and now had bedsores because they dont roll you either. They wont even let him back in his wheelchair.
