You have a good point, my friend. Since most energy companies are privately
or corporate owned, to improve the infrastructure, requires major
investment/expense. That money comes in revenue by the customers. To
increase rates
in most area that are regulated by the government, requests approval.
Without that approval, the energy companies can not increase their rates.
Without the rate increases, there is a lack of necessary improvement.
Increase the rates in a down economy and suddenly you are the bad guy to those
who
can't afford their electric bill.

I could be wrong on this, but I believe we use a lot more electric energy in
this country then our Euro counterparts. Of course, we waste more too.

I fully comprehend that it is not feasible the very cables in all areas, but
it does help protect the grid if everything is updated and the cables
efficiently protected.

The US government is looking at ways to upgrade the electrical grid. This
is an infrastructure problem and one that needs to be resolved. We are losing
way too much energy through our outdated electrical grid and the stimulus
could provide funds or tax breaks which would encourage the electrical
companies to get off their dead asses and do something about the electrical
problems
here.

You'd be surprised how much Europeans know about American news. When a
significant number of Americans lose power, it makes the news over there. My
ex-wife and her friends are just amazed at how frequently a large number of
people lose power from winter storms. That just doesn't happen too often in
Europe. I mean come on. We have a winter every year and we should be
prepared
to handle it in the 21st century. Like I said in my previous e-mail, it
isn't like this is a once every 50 year event. Winter occurs every year and
usually there are ice storms every few years.

I'll climb down off my soapbox now.

The energy is owner separately and not operated by the government. Its

rocky terrain. Cable is not the perfect answer...just ask your local
provider. When underground cable faults (and it does) finding the bad spot or
fault
can be timely and more expensive then looking up a pole. Ice is ice and when
it happens... no one seldom knows. Just pray for those guys who are working
around the clock without sleep working with high volts, while they brave the

And watch out for those home owners running generators and forgetting to
disconnect their power distribution boxes from the utility pole. May they be
ever so careful.

What I would complain about is the fact that it's the 21st century and our
country is still paralyzed by a ice storm in the winter. I don't know why we
can't spend more money on properly burying our electrical cables when there
are extremely vulnerable to ice, storms, and other natural occurrences. You
don't hear about this thing happening that often in Europe.

I mean it's not like winter storms happen once every 50 years or so.
My heart goes out to all those people suffering up there. I sincerely hope
those electrical workers are able to get things going as quickly as possible.

I am right in the middle of the worst of it. Areas and counties all around
me are still without power. God must be watching over this old quad. I lost
power for about 30 min. Amazing. Six people have died from carbon monoxide
poisoning.

There are still those in Kentucky without power and may still be without
power for 10 days.
That has to have a nasty effect on those in powered wheelchair and others
who are home
bound. I'm looking at 35 degrees while I know those in Kentucky at still
facing 20+ degrees
as utility workers are working around the clock in their attempt to restore
7000 lines that need
replacement. I know here when it happen, there were people that risks their
lives in trying to salvage
anything they saw laying on the ground and considered it junk, scrap and
salvaged wire. This requires
new line which needs to be ordered, shipped to site before installation.
This takes more time, while it affect those without power. I truly hope that
is not the case.
