Lissette, Yes, you are definitely correct about the metabolism acceleration! In fact, that is one of the main aspects of the Atkins "inner workings." I've known this from my own knowledge of biology just as a teacher. And now AB people I know are telling me it's part of Atkins (and now I just read that part the other day). I've been working this over in my mind for quite a while, now. I'm not worried about the holidays as I've never had the "Ups-and-(No)-Down" weight issues this time of year... I stay pretty constant no matter what I eat. (But I guess an Atkins-type diet could change what ingest a bunch this time of year! ...so possibly my non-issue with ups and downs, too.)
Basic biology is all I really needed to understand the differences between starchy "storage" foods, immediate energy "sugar-type" foods and the "longer-term energy" protein foods... (Wheelchair's statement about white foods). So in teaching some biology I already know some basics without thinking much... including calories in must equal calories burned just to stay the same! But it seems this diet rests on the idea that if you cut out the first two groups (sugars and starches) which are already "perfectly-body-formulated" for immediate burning and/or then breakdown for use later and then storage for even much later access --i.e. it's the whole reason football teams eat big pasta dinners before games-- then the only thing left to burn is your own stored energy (fat) using ingested protein-calories to provide the metabolic energy to do so. And THERE is your point about boosting metabolism by eating more often... not necessarily less food. It conditions your body to more consistently use/burn stored energy. Now, the main reason I asking the Q-List about any experiences with Atkins is because of the "Q Factor." I am much more hesitant to change WHAT I eat more than hesitant about how much or how often. It took me many years [like 18-20 yrs] to get my bowel routines in check with minimal medications and time for "doin' the deed" (and I thank yogurt for eA! Half the bowel & IBS meds, half the acid reduction meds, and half the toilet-time... all in a little yogurt. Yay for me!!) Oh, BTW, W: As tasty as a bowl of cabbage soup and/or beet soup sounds (Honest! I like these!), I have very overactive bowels that already need meds to keep them slow enough to manage... Not to mention how my students would "enjoy" the sulferous-methane-laden aromas I'd "emit." (Hmmm... on second thought.... <<grinning devilishly>> I can see it now: "Dear Students: If you do not pay attention well enough to understand directions the first five times, I'll be happy to come to your seat to help one-on-one." That strikes me as being good, dare I say "sound," motivational teaching if I ever heard any! Regarding staying away from white foods, it's difficult but I mostly do. We tend more toward Asian-styled meals when it comes to chicken and fish (and the occasional beef). My wife spent a fair amount of time in Indonesia, among other nearby areas, and we both prefer the food. So between the Thai and/or Indonesian-styled cooking she does most of the time, I'm exposed more to white rice and noodles than I am potatoes and breads. I just end up skipping A LOT of the starchy parts taking just enough to complement (rather than supplement) the rest. So anyway, that's my story... why, what I do know, what I do eat, and hopefully enough to find out more from those who've gone before. Thanks a bunch, All... I'm not really one to talk about diets but I believe that eating less doesn't necessarily mean you'll lose weight, in fact eating a little bit every couple hours will accelerate your metabolism and will help you burn fat, if you're not eating enough, your body will hang on to whatever fats go into it and you can gain weight. Of course it's important to whatch what you eat too and make sure you're diet is well balanced, like if you don't eat meat, be sure to eat other kinds of protein. May I suggest cabbage soup between meals or beet soup. Eating nothing white will also help you achieve your goals too. Best Wishes In a message dated 11/23/2009 7:15:58 P.M. B-fast: 1/2 serving non-fat or low-fat, sugar-free yogurt and 3-4 prunes. Lunch: Nothing... I nibble all day at the following snack... Snack: 1/2 serving (or less) dry Grape Nuts cereal. Dinner: Veggies (broccoli, green beans or asparagus) with, A) Low-fat, skinless chicken breast with 1/2 cup rice, B) 1.5 small corn tamales (no meat fat and low fat cheese), or C) Medium fish fillet with low-sodium seasoning, and a little rice. We don't use salt and pepper (don't even own shakers -- we just looked at each other like "Duh?" the first time we had guests over and one requested S&P! [was kinda funny!]) Veggies and rice (or corn masa) make up most of my calories -- plus a few from the cereal and prunes. I very rarely snack on anything other than my daily cereal snack -- which is just given to me each morning in a cup that I carry on my chair with me all day. So, given that, I kinda doubt I'm over-eating. And if I started eating any less than that I'd proably be very much under-eating (if I'm not already). THIS is why I'm looking at an alternate diet. Any thoughts? Thanks, folks! --Tod ---- Mark BB <[email protected]> wrote: > NO THANKS...... > > Just eat less of what you like and over time you WILL lose weight. > > I lost almost 2 stone over 2 years and still pretty ok, just cut > down.
