I did over a month in the hospital when my appendix burst in 2011. I had a 14
inch incision down my abdomen area and was hooked up to a wound vac. My bowells
shut down completely and I couldnt eat or drink for close to three weeks. Did
have minimal sips of water but had the tube in my nose and would throw up if i
cheated. Every other day my father would come in and between the two of us
straining, I would attempt to get onto the bowell chair. It was scary with no
results, pain, passing out on the chair but it had to be done and the nurses
werent going to do it. I normally straight cathe independently, but was hooked
up to a foley and that got plugged up and i went dysreflexic bad, and they
still didnt believe it was clogged til I went crazy.  The same hospital that
taught me how to live as a quad and about dysrelexia, suddenly didnt know what
i was referring to. I told the infectious disease doc to please look it up and
at least prescribe something to
lower my blood pressure during these times. It was crazy to be in bed and deal
with so much, lorezapam helped me from going crazy at night. I just kept hoping
I could  get out of there without any secondary complications, but I got
c-diff. Then everybody treated me like I had the plague..........wearing gowns
and masks. My family refused to wear them because it was pointless because they
were so involved with my care.........my gf at the time and father did about
everything to keep the nurses happy. Somehow i made it out of there and could
very slowly and dangerously get in bed and cathe myself. Dad went back to
second shift the day I went home and i had to survive from 2 to midnight alone.
I wasnt sure how fast or if I would fully recover. I wouldnt say Im as good as
b4 all that happenned , but Im good enough to make it . Gf broke up with me,
swim organization changed things so i couldnt go back, counselor quit.......and
I fell pretty hard
emotionally. Im still here though and with that there is hope.
