In my "survey of one"--check out the Peristeen system by Coloplast. It is a rectal catheter with a small inflatable balloon--basically a rectal Foley. Water goes into your bowel through the Foley and the balloon keeps the water from going out. This is done while sitting on the commode. For most people, complete emptying takes place in 20-40 minutes. I've been using it for 5 months now, no accidents and my hemorrhoids have vanished.
At the moment medicaid and some private insurance is covering the system and Medicare coding is expected this fall. Since I sleep on my stomach, it's relatively easy for me. Every night we put a chux under me and one between my legs to catch "the results". Before I put my blankets on, my aide inserts a dulcolax suppository. That means that I have all night to fully empty and 99.9% of the time there is no suppository residue. I started doing this within a few years of my injury. I felt I had better things to do during the day, so why not try it while sleeping.
