Sometimes its easier to push, when you have help and someone else is
pulling. T-4, general places an individual in the Para category, rather than
a
Quad. Nursing Homes have "over-see' ers" and there are plenty of lawyers
that specialize in confinement and abuse in Nursing Homes.
As Always, make sure that all ducks are in a row before you or he begins to
 spill the beans.
Best Wishes

Hes a t-4, his family gave up on him. Its not all his fault, he was fairly
independent b4 the sores except for shower and bowell management. I was
just hoping he could get into a group home or some kind of section 8
apartment. He is going to die where hes at. He does have full use of arms and
hands, but could never get the concept of how to complete a bowell routine. He
never even had any formal rehab when he was shot. Kind of a crazy story how
he got shot. He was a union insulator at the time and was looking for a
used tanning bed in the paper. He called a guy who had one for sale in St.
Louis. When he showed up at the guys house, he was told it was down the hall.
When he got to the room down the hall the man pulled out a gun and said"
give me all your money", he refused and was shot in the back and head. I
helped this man get a van and drive in 05. He was doing laps right beside me
in
the pool. I was more independent at c7 than he was at t-4 except for fine
hand motor skills. Some people just cant adapt to a new kind of life.

Ron,

Do you mean c-4? Because anyone who is a t-4 can be fully independent with
self care, unless he has other significant deficits you didn't mention
(e.g. TBI.)

If he is, in fact, a fully cognizant t-4 with a foley, colostomy and
pressure sores he has demonstrated that he takes no personal responsibility
and
most likely there is nothing you can do to help him in the long run. I may
sound heartless, but I've met my share of people like this and they are
emotional and resource blackholes--you can put all your energy and money into
helping him, but if he doesn't take some responsibility it will all be a
waste.

Don.

I agreed with wheels, call 911 and if nothing else they might be able to
give him an advocacy number to call, what is going on is criminal. Have him
give your information (how to get a hold of you) to the police and then
maybe you can have an idea of what advocates are available to him in case they
don’t allow him to make other outside contacts as punishment. I know,
illegal, but it does happen. Hopefully you can help him out. Joan

Subject: [QUAD-L] What to do about a paraplegic in need

I have known this man who is approximately a functional t-4 paraplegic
from a gunshot wound for ten years. His wife left him years ago for a
chiropractor and he moved in with his elderly mother. She turned 84 and
evidently
couldn't do anymore bowell routines or showers for her son. He got a
colostomy bag installed, as well as a foley. This helped his mother manage him
for
awhile but he got a couple pressure sores on his buttocks from lack of
pressure relief and few if any showers. His brothers and sister conspired
against him with a plan to take him for a "ride" that consisted of loading him
up and dropping him in the front waiting area of a nursing home here in an
outskirt community of St. Louis. He met a woman that was a "friend" that
wrote checks and cleaned out his entire checking account . The money was
written to the "friends" sister in an attempt to help him supposedly hide his
money from the Medicaid spendown. Once the nursing home figured out what was
going on they sent him to another nursing home. The paralyzed man doesn't
know where he is and all he can tell me is there is no one white there and
his power chair is in the hallway. Upon asking to get out of bed on several
occasions he has been denied. His television set was stolen during the
night by a large woman. His foley was ripped out of his penis on accident by
one of the male attendants that speaks very little English. I talked to him
during the night and told him to call paraquad or the local independent
living center and explain his life is in danger. Im not sure what else I can
tell him to do. He is trying to figure a way to commit suicide as well.
