Thanks for the pointers Dan & Pickle! As Pickle suggested, I've got a comm slot ethernet card and a full 68040 in the Q630. After my original posting, I googled around a bit and found the MacBSD links and install instructions as well.
Looks like I'm lucky with my timing as far as the IDE support goes, but I've got an external SCSI HD just in case. I'll ask on the MaX list about potential network speed improvements. Now I just gotta figure out where to dump the 15 gigs of stuff while I repartition the HD for BSD.
